Beyond any doubt, Buenos Aires is the economic, political and cultural centre of Argentina. Almost a third of the country’s population lives in the capital and the capital-surrounding area, making Buenos Aires a huge, vibrating and booming city. Having been a major gateway for centuries, Argentina’s capital is characterized by numerous contrasts. Western and South American world, tradition and progress, past and present collide visibly in this fascinating capital city. Here you have the traditional tango district of San Telmo, where time seems to have stopped long ago. There the commercial city centre whose hustle and bustle can certainly keep up with any Western metropolitan city. Being the countries “melting-pot” of a multitude of European influences, the lifestyle and the residents´ mentality differ from the rest of the country's population. The people of Buenos Aires are proud of their European ancestors and live much more orientated towards a western lifestyle than the rest of the country does. As if to make clear the difference, Argentines even have their own name for the residents of their capital and call them “Porteños”, the people from the port-city. The majority of international and national companies reside in the Buenos Aires area. It is unnecessary to mention the economic power resulting from that fact. The city´s convenient location with access to the Atlantic Ocean furthermore makes it a crucial import and export city.
